Transportation Logistics Services keeps the Lab moving. Our team delivers packages, freight, and mail once they’ve been received and processed, and helps move materials and equipment across the site, to Excess/Salvage, or to off-site locations. We also handle deliveries of dry ice, shred bins, machine carts, and metal hoppers.

Package/Freight/Mail Delivery

Once packages, freight, and mail have been formally processed through Receiving, they are delivered by Transportation.
Deliveries are free. Delivery location is driven by the location selected by the requisition creator in FMS, so please ensure you select the appropriate delivery location for the material when entering your requisitions. Rerouting of already delivered material requires a project ID (PID).
Excess/Salvage

Excess & Salvage is a program managed by Property Management. When government property is no longer needed, it can be sent to Excess/Salvage. All material going to Excess/Salvage MUST follow the EHS Excess/Salvage Guide for guidance on decommissioning the material/equipment, including approval by the relevant Safety Coordinator or Building Manager. Material will not be automatically picked up from cages; all requests require a work order.
Pictures of all items must be included in the work request. Material must be detached from the wall or other equipment before entering the Transportation request. For assistance detaching items, please enter a general work request.
Transportation will pick up the material/equipment and transport it to Excess/Salvage once the material/equipment has been deemed free of hazards and all approvals are in place. Excess/Salvage is picked up free of charge and is limited to a few items per request. We request a minimum of 3 days notice for requests.
For office or lab cleanouts, please work with the Space Planning Moves Team for your request.
Unsure what to do with unwanted materials, check wasteguide.lbl.gov for guidance on how to get rid of materials. Excess/Salvage does not accept any of the following:
- Trash/Debris/Uncontained Broken Glass
- Used packaging material/cardboard
- Adhesives
- Opened chemicals
- Greases Solvents
- Aerosol cans
- Cleaners
- Oils
- Damaged VDTs or CRTs
- Gas cylinders
- Paints
- Wastes
- Biological materials
- Glues
- Radiological material
Approvers are required to confirm that there are no hazards and material can be safely moved:
- No exposed broken glass or needles
- Glass is appropriately packaged
- All liquids/oils have been drained (unless Excess/Salvage intends to resell and has provided approval to transport)
- Rad has been cleared/decontaminated
- All hazard stickers (biological, radioactive, etc.) have been removed
- Everything is secure and safe for transport (items flush on machine carts, cords are not dangling, boxes are closed, etc.)
- Appropriate paperwork is attached
- Property management paperwork is completed
- Total weight is less than 700 lbs on machine carts (request pallet if over)
Excess/Salvage requests are scheduled for specific days of the week in the following locations (other locations are handled on an ad hoc basis):
- B50 once week/Tuesday
- B62/B66 once week/Wednesday
- B67 once week/Wednesday
- B90 once week/Wednesday

Excess/salvage pickups are free of charge. All material MUST be free of hazards.
Other Material Movement

Transportation will move materials and equipment around the Lab, off-site Lab buildings, and local locations (e.g. LLNL, Sandia, SLAC) using a variety of equipment and vehicles. Large/heavy items may require assistance from the Riggers to move, which may impact the scheduled completion date. A project ID (PID) is required for all requests. We request a minimum of 3 days notice for requests.
Pictures of all items must be included in the work request. Material must be detached from the wall before requesting Transportation assistance. Please enter a general work request for detachment.
For office or lab relocations, please work with the Space Planning Moves Team for your request.
Dry Ice/Machine Carts/Metal Hoppers/Other Delivery Requests

Dry Ice
Dry ice can be delivered with a project ID (PID) using the delivery request form. Dry ice itself costs about $31/block plus the cost of the delivery driver.
Machine Carts
Machine carts are provided for 2 weeks and require a valid PID. To ensure safety, please follow these guidelines:
- Material should not extend beyond the edge/lip of the machine cart.
- Nothing over 50 lbs (if too big/heavy – request a pallet)
- NO HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
- Load heavy items on the bottom, lighter items on top
- Top level – no one item over 35 lbs
- Middle level – no one item over 35 lbs
- Bottom level – no one item over 50 lbs
- Total weight should be less than 700 lbs – request a pallet if weight is over 700 lbs
- Wooden machine carts can cause splinters – please consider wearing gloves when handling
- For pickup you must enter an Excess/Salvage request
Pallets
Pallets are best for moving heavy items. Pallets can be delivered using a valid PID.
Metal Hoopers
Metal recycling is managed by Property Management. Metal hoppers are provided with a valid PID. Pickup and delivery each require a work request.
Shred Bins
Shred bins are provided with a valid PID. Once full, enter an Other Material Movement request for pickup.
Mail/Shipping Pickup

There is very little outgoing/interoffice mail at the Lab. The following mailstops are the only mailstops that are checked daily for outgoing/interoffice mail:
- Directorate suite 050A-4112
- Library/FedEx 050-4032
- B50 050-4060
- HR 090-1116
- OCFO 090-1121
- DOE 090-1023
- B90 090-1995
- Health Services 026-109
Mail can be dropped at any of these stops or at B69 Mail Services for pickup without a work request. All other mail pick up requires a free Transportation mail pickup request and will be completed the next business day.
Material going to Shipping can be picked up for free, as long as it is less than 10 lbs. For material over 10 lbs, please provide a valid PID. Enter your request and it can be picked up the next day. Shipping pickup requests must have the FreightPOP FP# and have already been approved by Export Control/Property Management as required before entering your request.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How much does Transportation charge?
- Transportation costs ~$75/hour per person for chargeable work.
- Excess/Salvage pickup is free
- Deliveries of dry ice, machine carts, and shred bins cost ~$50
- Deliveries of metal hoppers cost ~$75
- How long does package/freight delivery take?
- Typically materials are delivered within 1-2 business days once received at B69.
- Chemical deliveries require an additional day for processing by the Central Chemical Receiving Facility.
- Large/heavy materials require planned moves and may require assistance from the Riggers. These deliveries will take longer and be coordinated with the recipient/researcher.
- How long does mail delivery take?
- UC Berkeley picks up all Berkeley Lab mail from the USPS. Berkeley Lab mail is picked up daily from UC Berkeley and sorted at B69 the next day. Mail is then delivered with regular packages.
- Why can’t Transportation deliver my package as soon as it arrives at Central Receiving?
- Packages must be officially received, sorted, and labeled before they can be distributed for delivery. Most premium (next day air) packages are processed and delivered the same day, while other material is delivered within 24-48 hours. Chemicals require an additional day for processing at the Central Chemical Receiving Facility.
- Does the Lab offer same day courier service?
- No, the Lab does not currently offer same day courier service. You can Google local couriers and reach out to Procurement to enter a requisition for services if needed.
- When are Riggers needed to help Transportation move heavy equipment?
- When the weight exceeds 500 lbs or when special handling is required to get equipment in and out of rooms, the Riggers may be needed to assist with the move.
- Will you pick up my Excess/Salvage from the cage at my building?
- We no longer pick up material from the cages without a completed Excess/Salvage request. This ensures that the material is free from hazards and safe to transport.
- Will you move my office?
- For office or lab relocations, please work with the Space Planning Moves Team for your request.
- Why isn’t mail picked up automatically?
- The Lab has very little outgoing and interoffice mail so only the most heavily used mailstops get picked up daily automatically.
