Facilities and Security and Emergency Services are teamed to ensure that the Laboratory is prepared in the event of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) by PG&E. The Power Outage Working Group (POWG) was formed in 2019 and is comprised of representatives from across all Science and Operations Areas. The POWG’s purpose is to identify and address critical preparedness elements in order to best position the Lab for safe and effective power shutdowns and restarts. This is accomplished by addressing lessons learned and best practices, developing and/or updating planning documents, and taking action on other preparedness initiatives as necessary. Key tasks for the POWG include:
- Promoting Division-level readiness and research continuity.
- Identifying and resolving critical issues.
- Formulating Facility-level load shedding plans.
- Providing feedback and support to Emergency Operations Center staff as needed for continuous improvement.
