Request a penetration permit to conduct penetration or excavation of any LBNL ground or surfaces. Penetration Permits are part of a rigorous Laboratory-wide program, operated by the Facilities Division, to improve the safety of employees and subcontractors who are digging, drilling, or excavating at the Lab.
Requirements
- Designated Responsible Individual (RI): There must be a designated RI who is responsible for obtaining a Penetration Permit and overseeing the safety of the excavation or surface penetration.
- Training Course: To become an RI, you must take the training course FAC0070 (Penetration Permit Procedure Training). Click here to register for the class.

If all requirements are met, the Utilities Coordinator will prepare and issue the permit to be signed by the Utilities Manager, Utilities Coordinator, and Responsible Individual.
